● EU officially approves Qualcomm's acquisition of NXP semiconductor
The European Commission today formally approved Qualcomm's $38 billion acquisition of NXP semiconductor, after the deal has been questioned by the European Union and assessed whether it would involve monopoly. EU antitrust commissioner said EU authorities will ensure that Qualcomm's acquisition of NXP semiconductor will not prevent consumers from continuing to enjoy these innovative technologies at a reasonable price.
As a condition of this transaction, Qualcomm will abandon the acquisition of standard essential patents related to NFC and some non-standard essential patents of NXP semiconductor, which will be transferred to a third party and granted for three years without royalties globally.
